The Tourism Investment Forum Africa (TIFA) 2025, held in Richards Bay under the vibrant theme “Tourism and Infrastructure Investment: Driving Economic Transformation and Enhancing Community Well-Being,” underscored the vital connection between infrastructure development and tourism-led economic progress across the continent. The event served as a premier platform to attract and secure investments in Africa’s tourism and related sectors, with a strong focus this year on developing secondary cities—such as Richards Bay—as emerging hubs of economic and tourism growth.
By hosting the forum in Richards Bay, also known as the City of uMhlathuze, TIFA sought to highlight the city’s potential beyond its industrial and port identity. The initiative positioned Richards Bay as an emerging destination for tourism, business, and investment, showcasing its diverse opportunities and untapped appeal to a broader audience.
Delegates and investors were introduced to several bankable, shovel-ready projects that reflected the region’s growing investment potential. These included the Richards Bay International Conference Centre (ICC) Precinct, the Waterfront Precinct Development—a vibrant mixed-use coastal hub—and The Ridge Development, envisioned as a modern urban mixed-use precinct. Another key initiative presented was the relocation of the Richards Bay Airport, aimed at enhancing connectivity and accessibility for both business and leisure travellers. Participants also toured selected project sites to witness firsthand the scale and promise of these investment opportunities.
TIFA 2025 brought together global investors, policymakers, and tourism leaders for high-level networking, strategic discussions, and B2B engagements. One of the central outcomes of the forum was the introduction of a Six-Point Investment Transformation Blueprint aimed at diversifying tourism destinations, promoting sustainability, and leveraging innovation and technology to enhance the sector’s competitiveness and long-term growth.
Additionally, the SME Zone provided a dedicated platform for local entrepreneurs to engage with financiers and established companies, fostering inclusive growth within the tourism value chain.
Ultimately, TIFA 2025 aimed to connect capital with bankable projects, stimulate economic growth, create jobs, and promote community development—ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach local people and drive sustainable transformation across Africa’s secondary cities.
