Mozambique is emerging as a compelling tourism investment destination along Africa’s south-east coast, offering a rare combination of bush and beach experiences. With a population of approximately 33 million and a land area of 799,380 km², the country is defined by its 2,700 km tropical coastline, warm crystal-clear waters, and diverse ecosystems. This natural richness, paired with cultural and heritage assets, positions Mozambique as a high-potential destination for eco-tourism, coastal leisure, and adventure travel.

The sector is already showing strong recovery and growth. In the first nine months of 2023, Mozambique recorded approximately 1.2 million international arrivals, an increase of 23% from 2022, signalling renewed global interest. The tourism industry supports over 74,000 jobs and includes thousands of hospitality and food service enterprises, providing a solid foundation for further investment and expansion.

Mozambique’s natural assets are central to its investment appeal. With 25% of its land dedicated to conservation, the country is well-positioned for eco-tourism and sustainable travel development. Its landscapes, ranging from beaches and marine environments to parks, rivers, and mountains, create diverse opportunities for investors targeting experiential and nature-based tourism products.

Government policy is actively supporting tourism growth through strategic reforms and improved accessibility. The introduction of an electronic visa system and visa exemptions for 29 countries has made entry easier for both tourists and investors. At the same time, development corridors such as Nacala, Beira, and Limpopo enhance regional connectivity through integrated transport networks linking ports, railways, roads and airports.

While infrastructure gaps and skills shortages remain, these challenges represent clear investment entry points. The government encourages participation through public-private partnerships, infrastructure development schemes, and workforce training initiatives. Priority areas include integrated resort development, basic infrastructure, and improving the overall business environment to reduce operational costs.

Large-scale projects already in the pipeline demonstrate the country’s ambition, from luxury integrated resorts in Nampula and Vilanculos to eco-tourism developments in Maputo Province. Supported by incentives such as exemptions on customs duties and VAT for tourism equipment imports, Mozambique is positioning itself as one of Africa’s next premier tourism destinations, offering investors early access to a growing and underdeveloped market.
