While Botswana is celebrated worldwide for its spectacular wildlife and pristine landscapes, its vibrant music scene offers visitors an equally authentic cultural experience. This August, travellers have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the country’s creative spirit as the Botswana Musicians Union (BOMU) Awards make their return after a one-year hiatus.
The 14th edition of the awards will take place on 29 August 2026 at the Gaborone International Convention Centre (GICC) under the theme “Beyond Music.” More than an awards ceremony, the event honours not only performers but also producers, songwriters, sound engineers, promoters and other industry professionals who continue to shape Botswana’s growing music industry.
As preparations gather momentum, the Awards Coordinator Mr Seabelo Modibe and his team have been engaging stakeholders and the media, highlighting the awards’ role as a platform for celebrating excellence while encouraging conversations about the future, challenges and opportunities within the local creative sector. Public voting in six categories remains open until 26 August, giving music enthusiasts the chance to support their favourite artists.
Newly elected BOMU President Gloria Zwikita has reaffirmed the union’s commitment to supporting local musicians, applauding their resilience despite ongoing economic challenges. Her message reflects the determination of Botswana’s creative community to keep the industry thriving.
For visitors, the BOMU Awards present more than an evening of entertainment, they offer a window into Botswana’s living culture. Alongside the country’s renowned tourism attractions, the celebration of music provides travellers with a memorable opportunity to experience the creativity, talent and cultural identity that make Botswana a destination worth exploring beyond the safari.
