This was one of the most defining moments of her life, as she found her “what” and “why”. She knew from then that she would actively participate in the travel and tourism sector in Botswana and beyond.
CHATTING WITH AFRICA’S TRAVEL ENTHUSIAST
WHICH DESTINATIONS DID YOU VISIT IN THE PAST (PLACE OR COUNTRY)?
Self-drive expedition to Khwai-Savute, Botswana
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT PARTICULAR DESTINATION?
As a travel curator, I aimed to promote local travel and highlight Botswana’s natural beauty, wildlife, landscapes, and people. I explored the Khwai and Savute areas to showcase their stunning beauty and wildlife on social media and, by extension, the global stage. My efforts were also focused on encouraging Batswana travellers to appreciate Botswana’s natural resources, mainly by disputing common stereotypes that exploring certain parts of Botswana is expensive and perhaps reserved for specific markets. On a personal front, I believe that adventure travel is about personal growth and self-discovery. By exploring, I step outside of my comfort zone, challenge my assumptions and beliefs, and confront my own limitations. This process of self-discovery is enriched when I engage in environments close to me, fostering connections and understanding on a deeper level. I now understand that travel is not just about exploring far-off places; it’s also about appreciating the beauty and diversity that exist in my immediate surroundings.
WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING ACTIVITY DURING YOUR TRIP?
The most interesting activity was camping in Savute, an area known for its breathtaking landscapes, abundant wildlife, and notorious lions. Our campsite was nestled in the heart of Savute, offering us a front-row seat in the wild. As night fell, we set up our campfire and prepared for a unique night. The echoing roars of lions reverberated through the night. It was an unforgettable and slightly nerve-wracking experience to be sitting inside our tent, surrounded by the mysterious sounds just outside our tent. Despite the occasional jolt of fear, the experience left an indelible mark, reminding me of the raw beauty and untamed nature of Botswana. Camping in Savute with lions roaring in the background remains an adventure I will cherish for a lifetime.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN ORDINARY AFRICAN REGARDING EXPLORING AFRICA AND THE REST OF THE WORLD?
Resilience, adaptability, and respect are crucial when visiting Africa. The continent is vast and diverse, with many challenges ranging from political instability and economic hardship to environmental issues. However, if travellers look beyond these challenges and stereotypes, they’ll discover the beauty of Africa. It’s essential to be adaptable and flexible in the face of unexpected situations, such as culture shocks, changes in travel plans due to political unrest, or transportation delays due to unforeseen circumstances. Respect is also a vital factor. Despite cultural differences, there is a universal desire for connection and understanding. By approaching people with respect, curiosity, and an open mind, visitors can forge meaningful connections and gain a deeper appreciation for the continent’s diversity. Ultimately, travelling to Africa, or the rest of the world, can be a transformative experience that teaches valuable life lessons and helps individuals grow.
