WHICH PLACE DID YOU VISIT (PLACE AND DISTRICT)?
Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) Deception Valley, Matswere In Ghanzi District.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THAT PARTICULAR PLACE?
To get to know Botswana and for recreation purposes.
WAS IT A SOLO OR GROUP TRAVEL?
It was a group travel, last-minute planning and we made a WhatsApp group 3 days before the trip. It started as a joke when one of us sold the idea to us all in the group and jokingly we all tagged ourselves and it ended up being serious.
SEASON OF YOUR VISIT (WHEN)
Spring.
WHO WAS YOUR TRAVEL GUIDE & ACCOMMODATION PROVIDER?
Our travel guide was Lengau Wilderness.
WHAT TYPE OF ACTIVITIES DID YOU DO DURING YOUR EXCURSION?
We did morning and evening game drives. The morning drive started at 6 while we were still sleepy and but we got to enjoy viewing different wildlife like kudus, springbok all in one place and enjoyed gazing at the stars in the evening. Capturing the sunset was the most amazing and magical moment for me as we relaxed and enjoyed the quietness and peace of the land.
THE UNEXPECTED THAT HAPPENED (GOOD/BAD)
Coming face to face with a lion with its piercing eyes, was a shocking experience for me as I was the first to see it, I was sitting on and closed the window, we were all scared in the vehicle and everyone was dead silent but we all laughed as it moved away from us.
WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING ACTIVITY DURING TRAVEL?
Viewing animals with a telescope was an amazing thing, we would play games like 30 seconds, monopoly and scramble, Capturing the sunset at a Salt pan, the Salt pan gives you a safe sense and clear space which enables you to spot an animal from a far distance. The tour guides were passionate about the wilderness. Although tent pitching was hectic it was a lesson worth learning. I needed to see the moon and stars so I stayed late despite what I could hear. We travelled in search of Rice which we labelled “R” and found it at Sau Pan. We had to celebrate as a team as it was a hustle to find rice in the wilderness, lastly, it was the first time meeting most of the people on this trip and we got to know each other, which made the trip more exciting, as personal differences didn’t count!
WHAT WAS THE WEIRDEST THING THAT YOU EXPERIENCED?
When the truck got stuck as we hit a sandy dune. The first meal we had was under a tree, we cooked it from firewood and shared it in the same bowl. The pit latrine was made from ‘’Mapako’’ and it wasn’t far from where were we sleeping. It felt like people were listening to every sound you made whilst inside the toilet.
WHICH LOCAL PLACE ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO VISITING?
Shakawe, the Okavango Delta.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO AN ORDINARY MOTSWANA REGARDING TRAVELLING?
Travelling gives you peace of mind. We miss a lot when not travelling. Botswana is beautiful, we need to explore it, more so that it does not require much, and it is more than the cost. It always helps to get away from social distractions. We also got to share life experiences and learnt a lot about each other at the same time enjoying each other’s company. Travelling to an unknown destination proved to be therapeutic as we were able to unwind and came back relaxed and ready to go on with our daily lives”.
