The Ministry of Environment and Tourism in Botswana has announced the temporary closure of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Khutse Game Reserve, and Gaborone Game Reserve due to heavy rains that have made these areas inaccessible. The closure, which took effect on 21 February 2025, will remain in place until conditions improve. Severe flooding has rendered roads impassable, making it tough to reach desired parts of the reserves.
Beyond the game reserves, the heavy rainfall has significantly disrupted Gaborone’s infrastructure and business operations. Several key roads are submerged, forcing authorities to issue travel advisories and redirect traffic. The flooding has also led to the closure of shopping malls, office complexes, and small businesses, causing economic strain on proprietors and customers. The Gaborone Dam has reached overflowing levels, raising concerns about further road closures and disruptions in surrounding areas.
Authorities are working closely with meteorological experts to monitor weather conditions and provide timely updates on when the reserves can safely reopen. Meanwhile, disaster management teams have been deployed to assess flood-related damages and provide relief to affected communities. The government urges residents in flood-prone areas to take precautions and stay updated on emergency announcements.
As more rain is expected across the country, both public and private sector stakeholders are collaborating to restore normalcy and develop long-term resilience strategies against future climatic challenges. Visitors planning trips to Central Kalahari Game Reserve, and Gaborone Game Reserve are advised to stay informed through official channels.
