Recently, seventy-eight young learners from 10 primary schools across Botswana had an unforgettable adventure in the Okavango Delta through the Children in the Wilderness (CITW) Botswana initiative pioneered by Wilderness.
Hosted as part of the organisation’s annual eco-camps, these camps go beyond textbooks, offering hands-on experiences in conservation, leadership, and wildlife appreciation. The initiative aims to nurture a generation that understands and values Botswana’s rich natural heritage, ensuring they become future custodians of the environment.
“The CITW curriculum teaches young learners about environmental conservation while also providing them with an opportunity to see the wildlife and wilderness they learn about in the classroom,” said Joe Matome, CITW Botswana Chairperson.
The recent camps provided lessons on mammals, food chains, bird adaptations, and the 4Rs (Respect, Recycle, Reuse, and Reduce). Beyond environmental education, the children also learnt about their rights, personal hygiene, and teamwork through sports and exciting game drives.
